Orphan Sponsorship Program
The Need:
Largely because of the HIV/AIDS pandemic taking the lives of the adult generation in
Africa, a staggering number of children are literally left to exist and fend for
themselves on the streets. They resort to scavenging and stealing or even worse to
merely survive. Hungry and abandoned, with no one to ever comfort them, they are
vulnerable, lonely, afraid and sick. With limited government welfare and "safety net"
programs as in the US, limited access to get a basic education i.e. required uniform cost,
no foster care, and no moral training, what kind of a society will this create for the
future? Having seen the conditions first hand it is not overly dramatic to state that this
is truly a tragedy of humanity!
Objective:
Identify orphans to place them in willing families providing hugs, direction, caring,
guidance and love. The program will subsidize the basic costs the guardian family
would incur to raise the child, including meals, basic health care, school uniforms
and school fees.
Organization:
Ordinary Women, Inc. will fund, oversee and direct the program in partnership with our
Kenyan OWI chapter. The Pastors Fellowship in Kiminini was created after an Orphan
Forum was held on an OWI mission trip in July of 2006 uniting nearly 40 area pastors
for the first time. Their role as the program Board of Directors is to be the local
overseeing body reviewing program operations, placements, and act as the sounding
board for the program staff.
Staff:
The in-country program facilitators, qualified social workers, will run the program and
make regular home visits checking on the welfare of children in the program.
Primary School:
Primary school is government sponsored so no tuition is required. Uniforms, however,
are
required. For the monthly donation we do request an annual pledge commitment, so OWI can, in turn, sustain a child for the entire year. We are also focusing on this age group since they
are more vulnerable living on the street.
High School:
High schools are boarding schools with required tuition. The monthly donation of $45 covers the tuition,
room and board. There is a one time HS set-up donation of $170, which includes a mattress, bedding,
2 uniforms, personal effects and stationary.
Sponsored Child:
Upon completion of the Sponsorship Form and the receipt of your contribution you will
receive a profile of your child with current photographs. We encourage getting to know your
child and keeping in contact via letters and emails. There is nothing more precious for an
orphan child to receive mail from someone who cares and who has taken an interest in them. Let them know he or she is not forgotten. This gives hope like nothing else!
Donations and Pledges:
We understand not everyone can commit to a monthly or annual pledge. Please prayerfully
consider a one-time gift. All donations go a long way in Kenya.
-A donation of $5 feeds a child for the week.
-A donation of $20 supplies the basic health needs for a year.
-A donation of $10 supplies a treated mosquito net for a year.
-A donation of $60 covers their clothing and shoes for school.
Thank You for Caring!
