2004 Women's Conference

Kenya 2004 Womens Conference

Since we were a women's group going to visit a Kenyan Church, we expressed a modest wish to have a little get-together with the women of that church, like over coffee. Just to talk about what it is like to be a Christian woman in Kenya and find out about their issues and issues in common. Well, the pastor responded and requested that we do a Women's Conference. We were stunned and feared that we had somehow misrepresented ourselves in our previous correspondence. We were not conference speakers; we were not holding positions in our church. We were just ordinary women from the pews of the church. We prayed about this and, once again, God led us beyond what we had ever dreamed of. At this very time, our church released a curriculum on HIV/AIDS designed to be taught by laypeople. We felt right away that this was to be part of our conference, since HIV/AIDS is prevalent in the area we were going to.

The theme of our conference was "Ordinary Women-Extraordinary Purposes". In fact, we had a testimony in the making in terms of our free medical clinic. This is how it turned out. More than 400 Kenyan women attended our day and a half conference. God was gracious to provide us the funds to feed all participants, since a lot of them came from one or two days walk away. God equipped us to teach about HIV/AIDS, which was very well received. In fact, we commissioned our six Kenyan sisters to continue teaching the curriculum after we left, which they have done. They even held a youth conference using the curriculum. Also, we shared our testimonies and delivered a gospel message, and lives changed. God was present. There are no words to describe the awe of the Holy presence. But we can say we FELT THE AWE. We had wonderful time worshiping our Lord together, as sisters in Christ.
